‘House Of The Dragon’ Trailer Brings Back That ‘Game Of Thrones’ Magic

It’s been a long time since I felt any kind of excitement about a new Game Of Thrones . . . . well, anything.

The flagship HBO show left fans—including yours truly—on a sour note, rushing the ending in the most muddled way imaginable.

Meanwhile, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has spent over a decade—since July of 2011—writing the latest novel in the series. The Winds Of Winter may never come. Nobody, at this point, would be shocked. Fewer tears than I would have once expected would be shed.

But damn. This trailer for House Of The Dragon, a prequel to Game Of Thrones, looks absolutely stunning. It has my hype for this fantastical world restored in a way that only a new book, or perhaps a new Dunk & Egg novella, could.

I did chuckle a bit when an elderly woman told the younger princess Rhaenrya Targaryen that the men of Westeros would “sooner put the realm to the torch than see a woman ascend the Iron Throne.”

I mean, to be fair, look what happened the last time a woman—specifically a Targaryen woman—ascended said throne?

With a dragon.

“History does not remember blood. It remembers names,” the trailer’s tagline concludes.

The new series was created by George R.R. Martin (whose tome Fire & Blood serves as backdrop to the story). The showrunners are Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik (who directed some of the very best episodes of Game of Thrones).

House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Prince Daemon Targaryen. It’s a helluva cast and crew.

House of the Dragon debuts on HBO on August 21st, 2022. It’s probably the show I’m most excited to review this year. Be sure to follow me on this blog for all my episodic TV reviews, game reviews and more.
