Patrick Roberts’ stoppage-time goal earned Sunderland a place in the League One play-off final as they earned a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.
The draw at Hillsborough was enough to send the Black Cats to Wembley having claimed a 1-0 win in the first leg at the Stadium of Light.
Wednesday’s Lee Gregory wiped out Sunderland’s first-leg advantage though, as he put the Owls 1-0 up on 74 minutes.
The home side then pushed for second on the night, but Alex Neil’s men had other ideas.
Jack Clarke pulled away on the left flank before crossing the ball low to former Manchester City youngster Patrick Roberts, who fired home from six-yards out.
Wednesday continued to push hard for a winner on the night, a head injury to the Owls’ Sam Hutchinson meant there was still seven of the allotted ten minutes of stoppage time after Roberts’ goal, but it was to no avail.
Darren Moore’s side, who were relegated from the Championship last season, will thus spend another season in League One.
Meanwhile, Sunderland will be looking to return to the second tier after a four-year absence, where Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe Wanderers stand in the way.

Moore’s men had the better of a fairly uneventful first half – their best chance coming when Anthony Patterson held George Byers’ well-executed bicycle kick.
Roberts fired straight at Owls goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, before Gregory levelled the tie with a close-range finish as he got on the end of Marvin Johnson’s cut back.
It looked like the home side would find a goal to send them to Wembley. However, Clarke, who is on-loan from Tottenham, got away down the left before pulling the ball back for the onrushing Roberts to convert.
Sunderland have now lost just one of Neil’s last 16 matches in charge, ahead of their clash against the Chairboys on May 21.
