Alibaba’s Cainiao to expand its logistics service in Latin America

Alibaba’s logistics arm Cainiao announced a development plan for Brazil on Monday, including the proposed opening of a Latin American headquarters in Sao Paulo. The company said in a press release that it plans to launch nine distribution centers in the country and add 1,000 smart lockers across ten key cities for package and food delivery. Cainiao claims its local express delivery network covers over 1,000 Brazilian cities, offering customers one-day delivery in Sao Paulo and several major hubs in partnership with local delivery companies. Cainiao’s moves in Brazil come as more Chinese companies regard the country as a key location for their overseas expansion, including online retailer Shein – which is testing a platform model there – and Kuaishou, which has identified Brazil as a priority region for monetization and has built its own local team to pursue this end.
