Jackson State vs. N.C. Central live score, updates, highlights from Deion Sanders’ 2022 Celebration Bowl sendoff

The right to be crowned Black national champion comes down to the Celebration Bowl between Jackson State and N.C. Central on Saturday.

A win for the Tigers (12-0, 8-0 SWAC) or Eagles (9-2, 4-1 MEAC) would represent the first title for the respective coaches. Deion Sanders came close in 2021, with JSU falling to South Carolina State in the Celebration Bowl.

On the other side is MEAC Coach of the Year Trei Oliver, who has engineered a turnaround in just his third campaign in Durham, N.C. His team’s berth in the 2022 Celebration Bowl follows a 4-8 season in 2019 and a 6-5 season in 2021.

N.C. Central is led by quarterback Davius Richard, the 2022 MEAC Offensive Player of the Year. He runs an offense that led the MEAC with 442 yards and 38.4 points per game. He and the Eagles will face off against the top-ranked defense in the SWAC. Jackson State has given up a paltry 233.3 yards and 11.3 points per game.

Likewise, Shedeur Sanders — son of coach Deion Sanders — will pit the SWAC’s top-rated offense (447.8 yards, 38 points per game) against a defensive unit that ranked first in the MEAC in points allowed per game (20.4) and second in yards allowed per game (326.1).

Regardless of who walks away from Atlanta as the Black national champion, this will be the final game for Sanders as Jackson State coach. After the game, he will take his talents — as well as several players and coaches — to Colorado, where he has been named head coach.

Fourth quarter: Jackson State 34, N.C. Central 34

3:31 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Jackson State. With no time left on the clock, Sanders throws a jump ball to Hunter, who makes up for the missed catch earlier with a potential game-tying score! The PAT is good, and we’re going to overtime.

OH MY GOD!!!! JACKSON STATE!!! Shedeur Sanders hits Travis Hunter for the 19 yard TD on 4th & 10!! Extra point is good and we’re going to OT!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/QMkQLssdvz

3:31 p.m.: Sanders is hit as he rolls right and lets the pass go, bringing up fourth-and-10 from the 19 with 7 seconds remaining.

3:30 p.m.: Hunter had the ball at the 1-yard line, but couldn’t gather it inbounds, setting up third-and-10 from the 19-yard line.

3:29 p.m.: Timeout, N.C. Central (0:24).

3:28 p.m.: It appears the officials won’t sort it out, giving Sanders time to talk to their coaches. Poor management by the officials, who also let 5 seconds off the clock.

3:27 p.m.: Sanders clocks it, but someone called a timeout. The officials need to sort this out.

3:27 p.m.: Sanders to Coleman at the 19-yard line.

3:26 p.m.: Powers nearly makes a circus grab but lands out of bounds inside the 10 to bring up second-and-10.

3:25 p.m.: Sanders buys time and finds Martin for 10 yards and a first-down gain to the 31-yard line. The Tigers live yet longer.

3:24 p.m.: Timeout, Jackson State (1:16).

3:23 p.m.: Sanders finds Hooks for 11 yards to set up fourth-and-7 from the NCCU 41. This is the game if they don’t convert.

3:22 p.m.: Timeout, N.C. Central (1:26).

3:21 p.m.: Sanders takes an untimely, 12-yard sack sack from Jessie Malit at the Tigers’ 48-yard line.

3:21 p.m.: Play has been stopped to address an injured NCCU defender. Jackson State faces second-and-6 from the 40-yard line. With time now a factor, this is four-down territory.

3:19 p.m.: Sanders is surprised by the snap, but he gathers it and finds Hooks for 16 yards to the N.C. Central 44-yard line.

3:17 p.m.: Sanders throws a high ball to Hunter, who brings it in for 15-yard gain to the 34-yard line.

3:16 p.m.: Sanders has Powers on the sideline, but the receiver drops it to make it second-and-10.

3:15 p.m.: Jackson State takes over at its 19-yard line following a near-disastrous fumble recovered by the Tigers.

3:09 p.m.: 2-POINT ATTEMPT SUCCESSFUL. The Eagles pull their own version of the “Philly Special,” with Hicks finding Richard all alone in the end zone — the second such play this game. The Eagles lead 34-27 with 4:31 left to play.

3:08 p.m.: NCCU will attempt a 2-point conversion to make it 34-27.

3:07 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, N.C. Central. Two plays later, Collier takes it in for a 7-yard touchdown. Following the play, Jeremiah Brown is called for a flagrant foul, resulting in his ejection and giving 15 yards on the kickoff.

— 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 @𝗙𝗧𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝟳 (@FTBeard7) December 17, 2022

3:06 p.m.: Richard finds Twan Flip Jr. on the slant route for 12 yards and a first down at the 9-yard line.

3:04 p.m.: Collier gets another gashing 8-yard run up the middle to set up first down at the Tigers’ 24-yard line.

3:03 p.m.: Hunter takes the brunt of a tough Collier 9-yard run, loses his helmet and immediately retaliates by shoving the running back. Officials keep their flags in their pocket.

3:02 p.m.: Richard’s long ball falls incomplete, but the side judge threw a flag for pass interference against Shilo Sanders to convert third down. Eagles get a fresh set of downs at the Tigers’ 41-yard line.

3 p.m.: Jackson State only rushes three, giving Richard plenty of time to find McCall for 10 yards and a first down at the 39. Curious, considering there’s a true freshman in at guard to replace Simpson.

2:59 p.m.: N.C. Central guard Xi Simpson has to be helped off the field with what appears to be an injury to his right leg. Could be impactful in the game’s final stage.

2:56 p.m.: Collier gets a nice gain on the zone-read option, but it’s negated by a holding penalty, setting up first-and-20 from the 17-yard line.

2:55 p.m.: Codrington takes a massive hit on the kick return, shakes it off, then runs a few more yards to get NCCU to the 27-yard line.

2:51 p.m.: 2-POINT ATTEMPT UNSUCCESSFUL. Jackson State attempts a 2-point conversion, but Sanders is sacked on the attempt. The Tigers lead 27-26 with 11:25 left in the game.

2:51 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Jackson State. Hunter throws a wicked head fake to break the cornerback’s ankles and get himself a wide-open touchdown from Sanders.

JSU! Shedeur Sanders ➡️ Travis Hunter for the 18 yard TD! #CelebrationBowl pic.twitter.com/whTZh2agnv

— 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 @𝗙𝗧𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝟳 (@FTBeard7) December 17, 2022

2:47 p.m.: Timeout, Jackson State (11:33).

2:47 p.m.: Deontrae Brown sacks Sanders for a 15-yard loss, setting up third-and-goal from the 18-yard line. Untimely mistake by Sanders, who needed to throw it away.

2:45 p.m.: Sanders avoids the rush and finds Stevens for the first down. A face mask penalty on NCCU makes it first-and-goal JSU from the 5-yard line.

2:44 p.m.: Sanders had Powers all alone in the end zone, but underthrew it as he rolled left. That brings up third-and-8.

2:43 p.m.: Two penalties, one on each team, during that play: holding against Jackson State, then a late hit on NCCU linebacker Max U’Ren after Sanders slid on a scramble. After all the yardage is divvied out, that makes it first-and-10 Jackson State at the NCCU 23.

2:42 p.m.: Running back JD Martin gets 13 yards on the ensuing play to the NCCU 28-yard line.

2:41 p.m.: Sanders gets hit, but finds Hooks for 11 yards and a first down. Replay shows he didn’t actually catch it but, again, JSU moves too fast for the replay officials to get involved.

Third quarter: N.C. Central 26, Jackson State 21

2:36 p.m.: Jackson State gets a marginal second-down gain to set up third-and-7 near midfield. That’s the last play of the quarter, in which the Eagles outscored the Tigers 9-0.

2:36 p.m.: Sanders tries to find Powers on the long gainer, but the back judge is slightly in the way. Not enough to genuinely affect the play, but enough to cause some grumbles from the JSU faithful.

2:35 p.m.: Coleman with a nice return gives Jackson State the ball at its own 45-yard line.

2:33 p.m.: FIELD GOAL, N.C. Central. Olivo’s attempt is true, giving NCCU three more points and a 26-21 lead with 23 seconds left in the quarter.

2:32 p.m.: Young takes a keeper and is stopped at the 3-yard line. Kicking unit comes on to attempt the 20-yard field goal.

2:31 pm.: Richard takes a hit shortly after the play is called dead due to an illegal procedure penalty. JSU isn’t penalized, however, setting up second-and-goal from the 8-yard line.

2:29 p.m.: Richard finds Hicks for a 36-yard gain to the Tigers’ 30-yard line. One play later, Taylor gets a 23-yard gain to set up first-and-goal at the 8.

— 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 @𝗙𝗧𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝟳 (@FTBeard7) December 17, 2022

2:24 p.m.: Jackson State goes with the curious decision to attempt two short-yardage runs against that stout NCCU defensive front. The punt is muffed but recovered and returned to the Eagles’ 34-yard line

2:24 p.m.: Sanders hits Nico Powers for a 9-yard gain to start the drive.

2:20 p.m.: Coleman’s return gets Jackson State to the 22-yard line, but holding will knock them back 10 yards to the 12.

2:16 p.m.: Interesting development here. Olivo’s point-after attempt misses, giving NCCU a 23-21 lead with 5:45 left in the third. Will that come into play later?

2:13 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, N.C. Central. Beautiful pass by Richard and an even better catch by McCall to get his right foot and right knee down inside the lines for the score.

Davius Richard to Quentin McCall for the 12 yard TD!! #NCCentral #CelebrationBowl pic.twitter.com/kawZ43kEq3

— 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 @𝗙𝗧𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝟳 (@FTBeard7) December 17, 2022

2:12 p.m.: Good play by Richard to avoid getting tackled behind the line of scrimmage to get the ball to Collier for a minimal gain. The ball is knocked loose and bounces off the leg of an official out of bounds to set up third-and-8 from the 12.

2:11 p.m.: Richard takes the QB sneak on fourth-and-1, converting it and setting up first down from the Tigers’ 14-yard line.

2:10 p.m.: Richard avoids the upfield pass rush and gets what looks to be first-down yardage. The ball is spotted a full yard short, however, bringing up fourth-and-1.

2:08 p.m.: Fake punt alert! Tight end Kyle Morgan takes the direct snap and sneaks through the left for a 43-yard gain, setting up first down at the Tigers’ 24-yard line.

🚨NC CENTRAL FAKE PUNT!!!🚨 🔥🔥 #CelebrationBowl pic.twitter.com/BJvgFgccDP

— 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 @𝗙𝗧𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝟳 (@FTBeard7) December 17, 2022

2:07 p.m.: Quentin McCall catches the pass for 4 yards, but is 4 yards short of the line to gain.

2:07 p.m.: Richard throws the ball away on second-and-8, and who else but Coach Prime is there to catch it on the sidelines?

2:05 p.m.: NCCU dials up the perfect play, setting up a tunnel screen to offset Jackson State’s blitz. It goes for 14 yards to set up first-and-19 from the 27-yard line.

2:04 p.m.: Brandon Codrington fair-catches the 42-yard punt at NCCU’s 13-yard line.

2:03 p.m.: The Eagles send pressure on second and third down against Sanders, and it works. The Tigers will punt on fourth-and-11 from their 44-yard line.

2:03 p.m.: Sanders is hit for a loss on second-and-10; the Eagles accept the result of the play instead of an illegal hands to the face penalty, setting up third-and-11.

2:01 p.m.: A critical drive for both teams starts with a 8-yard run by Wilkerson to set up second-and-2. On the next play, Sanders hits Coleman for a 13-yard gain to the 45-yard line.

2 p.m.: Coleman’s return gets the Tigers out to the 23-yard line.

Halftime: Jackson State 21, N.C. Central 17

1:39 p.m.: Halftime stats:

1:37 p.m.: NCCU can’t get anything going with only 30 seconds left, and will head into halftime with a four-point deficit. The Tigers will get the ball out of the half.

1:33 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Jackson State. Sanders makes an incredible move in the backfield to spin out of a pass-rush and take it in for a touchdown. Jackson State leads 21-17 with 30 seconds remaining in the half.

1:31 p.m.: Timeout, Jackson State (0:35).

1:31 p.m.: Next play, Sanders scrambles for a 17-yard gain, setting up first-and-goal from the 9-yard line. The clock is ticking toward zeroes.

— 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 @𝗙𝗧𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝟳 (@FTBeard7) December 17, 2022

1:31 p.m.: Sanders has 14 yards to Dallas Daniels to the 26-yard line.

1:30 p.m.: Sanders finds Shane Hooks for 16 yards to the 40-yard line. The ball comes loose, but he is called down. It looks as if the ball might have been moving, but Jackson State moves too fast for replay to get involved.

1:28 p.m.: Sanders finds Coleman for a 13-yard gain, but the receiver takes a huge shot from MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Baker, taking him out of the game for now. Hudson, who was also in on the tackle, is down on the field. It’s a rough game, football.

1:27 p.m.: Wilkerson gets a couple tough runs to net 15 yards and a first down at the 30-yard line.

1:23 p.m.: Coleman, who had the 85-yard touchdown reception, is brought down at the 15-yard line after a short return on the ensuing kickoff.

1:19 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, N.C. Central. One play later, J’mari Taylor breaks two Jackson State tackles for a 10-yard touchdown. The Eagles retake the lead, 17-14, with 3:51 left in the half.

1:18 p.m.: Richard completes his pass to Hicks, who goes 7 yards to set up first-and-goal from the 10-yard line.

1:16 p.m.: That’s Richard’s sixth run out of eight plays on this drive. The latest goes for 3 yards on second-and-2 for a first-down conversion at the 24-yard line.

1:15 p.m.: NCCU tight end Luke Bracey is called for holding, setting up first-and-20 back at the Eagles’ 45. Richard makes up for it with a quarterback run, making a man miss after a short gain for an 18-yard run.

1:13 p.m.: Sanders again takes matters into his own hands, scrambling on third-and-3 for 8 yards to midfield. But Mercier is called for a late hit, tacking on 15 yards to the Jackson State 35.

1:11 p.m.: Richard gets a tough first down on third-and-1 off the quarterback keeper. The Eagles’ drive continues at the 35-yard line.

1:09 p.m.: NCCU will take over at its 25-yard line.

1:04 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Jackson State. Two plays later, Sanders hits a wide-open Kevin Coleman Jr. for an 85-yard catch-and-touchdown run. That gives JSU its first lead, 14-10, with 10:41 left in the half.

1:04 p.m.: Wilkerson gets 4 yards and some breathing room for Jackson State.

12:59 p.m.: Meanwhile, NCCU’s Richard has Smith running free in the zone, but throws it just behind him. The receiver drops it, bringing out the NCCU punt team from their own 41-yard line. The punt is downed at the 4-yard line, where JSU will take over.

12:57 p.m.: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is in attendance to help support Jackson State sophomore defensive lineman Charlton Goodell, who is his nephew.

12:56 p.m.: Richard takes the zone-read for an 8-yard gain to the Eagles’ 44-yard line.

12:54 p.m.: The first play of the second quarter is a swing pass to running back Santee Marshall, who has running room but falls down while fielding the pass for a 4-yard loss. That brings up fourth-and-7 and the punt team.

First quarter: N.C. Central 10, Jackson State 7

12:49 p.m.: Sanders is throwing on rhythm and finds Shane Hooks for 3 yards on second-and-2 for a first down at the 32-yard line.

12:46 p.m.: Richard had Devin Smith running up the seam, but the two weren’t on the same page; his pass falls harmlessly to the ground, and the punt team is out.

12:46 p.m.: For the second straight play, NCCU dumps the ball underneath for a marginal gain, setting up third-and-16 from the 38.

12:45 p.m.: And now the Eagles are called for holding on second-and-15, bringing up second-and-25.

12:43 p.m.: NCCU is penalized 15 yards for a chop block. The Eagles face third-and-25 from the Tigers’ 47.

12:41 p.m.: Fumble recovery, N.C. Central. Jackson State tries a jet sweep to Hunter; JaJuan Hudson knocks the ball from his hands with a well-placed hit, and the ball is recovered by Manny Smith at the Tigers’ 37.

12:40 p.m.: Timeout, N.C. Central (4:18).

12:39 p.m.: Jeremiah Williams and Jason Mercier converge on Richard on third down for a 6-yard loss. That’s the first Eagles drive that doesn’t result in points so far. Eagles will punt on 4th-and-12 from their 23-yard line.

12:35 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Jackson State. Sanders finds tight end DJ Stevens for a 24-yard touchdown to get on the board for the first time. N.C. Central still leads 10-7 with 6:28 left in the first quarter.

12:34 p.m.: Wilkerson gets a nice 13-yard gain to the 26-yard line.

12:33 p.m.: Shedeur Sanders scrambles for the first time, gaining 9 on second-and-7. A late hit out of bounds by NCCU’s Kole Jones gives Jackson State an extra 15 yards down to the NCCU 37.

12:31 p.m.: There’s a decent return by Jackson State, which gives them starting field position just past the 35-yard line.

12:27 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, N.C. Central. Richard takes the keeper 4 yards for a touchdown. It’s 10-0 N.C. Central with 7:27 left in the first quarter.

— 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 @𝗙𝗧𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱𝟳 (@FTBeard7) December 17, 2022

12:26 p.m.: And now the Eagles are breaking out the trick plays: A reverse that goes to Hicks, who then passes to Richard for 30 yards down to the 4-yard line.

12:25 p.m.: And now Richard takes a QB keeper off the right tackle. A nice spin move gets him a few more yards for a 21-yard run to the 35-yard line.

12:25 p.m.: Collier again starts the drive with a nice first-down run, taking it 11 yards to the Eagles’ 44-yard line.

12:21 p.m.: Eagles take over at their 33-yard line following an iffy punt and fortuitous bounce for the Tigers.

12:20 p.m.: The punt team is called for a false start; the Tigers looked as if they thought it was offsides, but the officials thought otherwise. Tigers to punt from their 28.

12:20 p.m.: Nothing doing for Jackson State’s first drive, as the Eagles stand tall on third-and-short to prevent the first down.

12:19 p.m.: Running back Sy’Veon Wilkerson gets a 3-yard run to start the Tigers’ first drive of the day.

12:16 p.m.: FIELD GOAL, N.C. Central. Adrian Olivo’s 32-yard attempt sails down the middle to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead with 11:37 left in the first quarter.

12:16 p.m.: Hunter, who was burned on the 42-yarder earlier in the drive, jumps a route and nearly picks off Richard. He’ll be credited with the pass defense, setting up a 32-yard field goal attempt for NCCU.

12:09 p.m.: Richard finds E.J. Hicks for a 42-yard gain — with Travis Hunter in coverage. The Eagles are driving inside the red zone after just three plays.
