The message was delivered on Monday by Permanent Observer for the League of Arab States at the UN Maged Abdel-Fattah, who voiced the “anger” of the Arab world over the “double standards” exhibited by the international community’s policies with regards to the Middle East.

The Arab League convened on Monday to discuss the situation in the Middle East with a special focus on Palestine, stressing the importance of building on the results of the fourth meeting of the Arab Ministerial Committee for the Defence of Jerusalem in confronting Israeli violations.

This comes a few days after Israeli police clashed with Palestinian protesters in the latest round of violence at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque.

Tensions around Al-Aqsa continued in Ramadan as Israeli forces repeatedly stormed the mosque to evacuate it of Palestinians secluding there.

Clashes have left at least 25 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces and dozens wounded, and 14 people in Israel have been killed by Palestinian attackers in the last two weeks, according to an AP count.

The Arab League called for decisive and immediate intervention to protect the Palestinian people, especially at Al-Aqsa Mosque, where is said the UNSC must support the preservation of the historic status quo in Jerusalem.

Abdel-Fattah said that that the Arab League calls on the Security Council to visit the occupied land of Palestine to assess the worsening conditions on the ground, and to discuss how to push forward Palestinian-Israeli negotiations under international supervision in order to reach a comprehensive peace settlement.

The Security Council should also push the Palestinian side to hold its postponed national elections as soon as possible in preparation for serious engagement in bilateral negotiations, Abdel-Fattah said.

‘Flagrant violations’

“The Israeli government is continuing its colonialism, which is a blatant challenge to the international will and to the resolutions of the Security Council, at the top of which is Resolution 2334,” the Arab League representative said.

Resolution 2334, which was adopted in 2016, concerns Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. It states that Israel’s settlement activity constitutes a “flagrant violation” of international law and has “no legal validity.”

“In the clear absence of accountability, Israel has continued its attacks against the Palestinians and its flagrant violations against the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Abdel-Fattah said in a statement on Monday.

Earlier this week, the leaders of Egypt, Jordan, and the UAE stressed the importance of respecting the historical legal status at Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, calling for sustained efforts to restore calm there in light of the recent escalation.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his Jordanian and Emirati counterparts called for respecting the role of the historical Hashemite custodianship of the Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

They also underscored the importance of stopping all Israeli measures that undermine the two-state solution and the need to find a political horizon for resuming “serious and effective” negotiations to resolve Israeli-Palestinian tensions in accordance with international law.
